The origin of the Brevard's famous white squirrels is the following story.
According to legend, white squirrels originated from a carnival.
A gentleman who owned a traveling carnival found a pair of white squirrels on his travels and kept them for his truck show.
Later, in the 1950s, after an unsuccessful breeding attempt, the pair was given to his young niece, Barbara.
Eventually, one escaped and the other was released.
Over the next few years, the appearance of white squirrels became increasingly common and became a bit of a joke in town.
NOTE: Although the authenticity of Brevard's history is questionable, the white squirrel is in fact a white version of the well-known Eastern gray squirrel.
