Monument to a Century of Flight

Monument to a Century of Flight was created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first powered, controlled, and sustained flight from the sandy beaches of Kill Devil Hills on December 17, 2003.

NOTE: Wright Brothers made their first flight on December 17, 1903.

Kitty Hawk Woods Reserve is a protected area with globally rare plant communities such as maritime deciduous forests, maritime wetland forests, and interdune ponds.

These communities exist on the remains of ancient sand dunes.

The ridges (high points) and swamps (low points and depressions) found in Kitty Hawk Woods Reserve are evidence of surviving dunes and indicate the location of ancient shorelines.

The varied topography of this maritime forest allows for the presence of wetland plants such as bald cypress and upland plants such as American beech.
