UEFN Technical Overview: Random Dungeon Generation with Scene Graph
The “different course on every run” experience in Random Lava Parkour 300+ is powered by a custom random-generation system built with UEFN Scene Graph and Verse.
When a new island session begins, the game generates a course from the starting area through the Level 300 checkpoint and the goal.
The course is not rebuilt when another player joins the same island session.
This allows everyone in the session to challenge the same generated dungeon.
Connecting Reusable Room Prefabs
Each parkour room is created as a Scene Graph prefab.
Every prefab contains markers that identify important locations, including its entrance, exit, checkpoint, obstacles, and traps.
When a new room is generated, its position and rotation are adjusted so that its entrance connects to the previous room’s exit.
Rooms, platforms, walls, and traps are handled as reusable modules.
Adding another prefab increases the number of possible course combinations.
The same system can also be reused for future maps with themes other than lava.
Increasing the Difficulty as Players Progress
Each parkour room has a difficulty value.
The available difficulty range changes at each checkpoint.
The system randomly selects suitable rooms and continues connecting one or more rooms until the required difficulty total for that section has been reached.
Easier rooms are used near the beginning of the course, while more difficult obstacles and traps become available later.
The difficulty ranges overlap around their boundaries, allowing the challenge to increase gradually instead of changing suddenly.
The system also records recently selected room types so that the same obstacle is less likely to appear repeatedly.
Rooms that have appeared less frequently are given priority, helping the generated course remain varied.
Preventing Rooms from Overlapping
Before placing a room, the system uses Scene Graph’s FindOverlapHits to check for nearby objects.
The normal connection between the previous room and the new room is ignored.
If another part of the course would create an unwanted overlap, the new room is not placed.
A straight course containing 300 levels would also require an extremely large area.
When the route approaches the edge of its configured area, the system selects a checkpoint that turns left or right.
This folds the long course back across the island.
Recovering from Generation Problems
Immediately after a prefab is generated, Scene Graph may need a short time before all of its components become available.
When an entrance, exit, or another required component cannot be found, the system waits and checks again.
If the component is still unavailable, the prefab can be rebuilt.
When a random room continues to fail, another room type is selected instead.
The previous room’s exit remains available until the new room’s entrance, exit, obstacle markers, and object placement have all been validated.
The connection is completed only after the new room is ready, reducing the chance of a broken course.
Placing Obstacles and Traps at Markers
Room prefabs contain markers for objects such as floors, walls, spikes, darts, bouncers, and other devices.
Verse moves registered Creative Props and devices to the marker positions in each generated room.
Reusing these objects means that every prefab does not need to contain its own complete set of devices.
Some rooms also randomize which traps are active.
Two appearances of the same prefab can therefore have different safe paths and trap patterns.
Rooms that contain enemies are recorded during generation.
After the full course is ready, enemy spawners are moved to their designated locations and enabled.
Per-Player Checkpoints and Spawn Animations
Generated checkpoint locations are saved separately for each player.
After falling into lava or being eliminated by a trap, the player can return to the most recently reached checkpoint.
The initial spawn and respawn sequences use Player Reference Devices and Cinematic Sequence Devices.
Multiple animation slots allow the sequence to play at each player’s location, with support designed for up to 12 players.
If an animation slot is unavailable, the animation is skipped and the normal respawn process continues.
A presentation problem therefore does not prevent the player from returning to the game.
Random Lava Parkour 300+ does more than select rooms randomly.
It combines difficulty control, overlap detection, route boundaries, recovery processing, checkpoints, and multiplayer systems.
Players do not directly see these technical processes.
However, they support the experience of starting from the same location without knowing which course will appear next—and enjoying a different challenge across repeated island sessions.
