Okutama & Around (Tokyo, Japan)

Okutama is located in the western part of Tokyo.

Located within the Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park, Okutama is known for its beautiful natural scenery and outdoor recreation.

Okutama is characterized by the following features.

Lake Okutama (Okutama Reservoir): Lake Okutama is a reservoir created by the Okutama Dam. Lake Okutama is surrounded by lush greenery and is a popular spot for boating and fishing. Cross Lake Okutama on the Mugiyama Floating Bridge or the Tomeura Floating Bridge, both of which are drum bridges floating on the lake!
Surrounding Areas: Ome City, Fussa City, and Akiruno City are located around Okutama, and all are attractive sightseeing spots!
Mt. Mitake: Mt. Mitake is a mountain located in Ome City, Tokyo. Mitake can be reached not only by hiking but also by the cable car and chair-lift of the Mitake Mountain Railway. Musashi-Ontake Shrine on Mt. Mitake is an important cultural and religious site.
Hiking Trails: There are a variety of hiking trails in Okutama. The trails offer spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and forests.
Tama River: Tama River runs through the area, providing opportunities for riverside walks and bicycle rides. It is a quiet spot to enjoy nature away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Camping Facilities: There are campgrounds in the Okutama area, where you can stay overnight and experience the outdoors.
Onsen (Hot Springs): Ryokan (Japanese-style inns) in Okutama have hot spring facilities, where you can spend a relaxing time surrounded by nature. For day-trip hot springs, we recommend Okutama Onsen Moegi-no-yu!
Local Cuisine: Local cuisine including freshwater fish from Lake Okutama can be enjoyed!
Access: Okutama is accessible by train from central Tokyo. It takes about 2 hours and is ideal for a day trip or weekend trip.
