Ryogoku (Tokyo, Japan)
Ryogoku is a sumo town located in Sumida-ku, Tokyo.
Ryogoku is one of the most active sumo wrestling areas in Japan.
Ryogoku is characterized by the following features.
- Sumo: Ryogoku is often called the center of sumo in Japan. Ryogoku Kokugikan (Ryogoku Sumo Hall) is famous as the venue for the main sumo tournament held three times a year (January, May, and September). Visitors can watch sumo and experience the unique culture surrounding this traditional Japanese sport.
- Sumo Stable: In Ryogoku, there are sumo stables where sumo wrestlers live and practice. Some rooms allow visitors to observe morning practice sessions, giving them a glimpse into the world of sumo.
- Museums and Art Museums: The Edo-Tokyo Museum is a must-see when visiting Ryogoku. The museum introduces the history and culture of Tokyo (formerly Edo) from the Edo period to the present day through hands-on exhibits, dioramas, and historical artifacts. Ryogoku also has several small museums and art galleries dedicated to sumo and Japanese culture. For example, the Sumida Hokusai Museum is dedicated to the famous Japanese ukiyoe artist Katsushika Hokusai. The museum exhibits Hokusai's works, and visitors can learn about his life and art.
- Chanko-Nabe for Sumo: Chanko-nabe is a hearty hot pot traditionally eaten by sumo wrestlers to build and maintain their strength. Many restaurants in Ryogoku serve chanko-nabe and offer sumo cuisine.
- Ryogoku Riverside Park: The Sumida River runs through Ryogoku, and there are parks and promenades along the river.
Ryogoku is a unique blend of the traditional and the modern, making it an interesting place for tourists and locals alike.
Whether you are interested in sumo, history, or simply want to explore Tokyo's culture, Ryogoku has much to offer!
