Tsukiji (Tokyo, Japan)
Tsukiji is a famous district in Tokyo, Japan, known primarily for its historic fish market, Tsukiji Fish Market.
Note, however, that the Tsukiji fish market was relocated to a new location, Toyosu, in October 2018!
Tsukiji and its historical significance are as follows.
- Tsukiji Fish Market: The Tsukiji Fish Market was known for its daily fish auctions, where an amazing variety of seafood was bought and sold. The Tsukiji Fish Market was a must-visit destination for tourists and food lovers alike, offering a unique experience of watching fresh seafood being auctioned off at a dizzying pace and enjoying delicious sushi and seafood at the many restaurants surrounding the market.
- Toyosu Fish Market: The fish market was relocated to the more modern and spacious Toyosu in order to improve hygiene and safety. The Tsukiji Fish Market's on-site wholesale area is no longer open to the public, but there is a separate area where visitors can learn about the history of the market and the fisheries industry.
- Tsukiji Outside Market: Although the market has moved to a new location, Tsukiji Outside Market is still a popular spot. The market is crowded with fresh seafood such as sushi and sashimi, as well as famous Japanese restaurants. You can also find special kitchenware and food-related products.
- Tsukiji Honganji Temple: The nearby Tsukiji Honganji Temple is a stunning Buddhist temple that stands in stark contrast to the bustle of the market. Its beautiful architecture and serene atmosphere are well worth a visit.
- Proximity to Ginza: Tsukiji is conveniently located near Ginza, an upscale shopping district famous for its luxury boutiques, department stores, and art galleries. You can explore both areas in one visit.
Although the Tsukiji Fish Market has moved, there is still much to see and experience in the surrounding area, making it a great destination for foodies and travelers interested in Japanese culture!
We encourage you to visit!
