Mt. Takao & Around (Tokyo, Japan)
Mt. Takao is a popular natural tourist attraction located in the western part of Tokyo.
Mt. Takao is characterized by the following features.
- Ease of Access: Mt. Takao is easily accessible from central Tokyo. It takes about one hour from Shinjuku Station by train. Take the Keio Line to Takaoyamaguchi Station at the foot of Mt. Takao.
- Natural Beauty: Mt. Takao is known for its scenic beauty and is a popular spot for hiking and nature walks. Mt. Takao is lush and green, and is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna.
- Hiking Trails: There are several trails to the summit of Mt. Takao are well marked and the ascent is generally moderate. Takao Yakuoin Temple, the Takao Monkey Garden and Wild Plant Garden, and many other points of interest. An hour's hike from the summit of Mt. Takao leads to Mt. Kobotoke Shiroyama in Uratakao.
- Takao Yakuoin Temple: Located halfway up Mt. Takao, Yakuoin Temple has a history of more than 1,200 years since its founding in 744 and is dedicated to the Yakushi Nyorai.
- Cable Car and Chair-Lift: A cable car and chair-lift are available to take you up the mountain for a short distance while enjoying the panoramic view. After that, you will need to climb to the top of Mt. Takao.
- Seasonal Attractions: Cherry blossoms in the spring and autumn leaves in the fall are beautiful, and the fire-walking festival in March is an annual event held at the Automobile Prayer Hall square at the foot of Mt. Takao.
- Local Cuisine: At the foot of Mt. Takao, there are various restaurants and food stalls offering local delicacies. Tengu-yaki, a type of pancake shaped like a long-nosed tengu, is a popular dish.
- Viewpoints: From the top of Mt. Takao, you can see not only Tokyo, but on a clear day, Mt. Fuji.
- Museums: The Mt. Takao 599 Museum offers exhibits and videos of the flora and fauna that inhabit Mt. Takao. Takao Trick Art Museum offers an immersive collection of unusual trick art and 3D art that uses optical illusions.
- Takaoyamaguchi Area: The area around Takaoyamaguchi Station is a shopping district with souvenir stores and cafes. Relieve the fatigue of hiking Mt. Takao at the Keio Takao Onsen Gokurakuyu hot spring!
- Tama Forest Science Garden: Tama Forest Science Garden is a natural park located about a 10-minute walk north of Takao Station. Tama Forest Science Garden conducts research and education on forest ecosystems, botany, and environmental science.
